In class recently we have been looking at the affect the rise of online TV has has on the traditional TV shows. I specifically looked at Eastenders the BBC program. EastEnders is a British soap opera created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland which has been broadcast on BBC One since 1985. Set in Albert Square in the East End of London in the fictional Borough of Walford, the programme follows the stories of local residents and their families as they go about their daily lives. Initially there were two 30-minute episodes per week but since 2001 episodes have been broadcast every weekday apart from Wednesdays. Within eight months of the show's launch, it reached the number-one spot in BARB's TV ratings and has consistently remained among the top-rated TV programmes in Britain. In 2013, the average audience share for an episode was around 30 per cent. The Inbetweeners 2

Image
The inbetweeners 2 Neil, Will and Simon receive an e-mail from Jay asking them to join him in Australia whilst on his gap year, in the e-mail he promises them that Australia is “epic bants”. With their lives now rather dull compared to their happy school days and legendary lads holiday, it's an offer they can't refuse. Once again, they put growing up and working ahead to the future on-hold, and embark on a backpacking holiday of a lifetime in an awful car, inspired by Peter Andre's 'Mysterious Girl'. Will soon finds himself battling with the lads to do something cultural, whilst they focus their attention on drinking, girls, and annoying fellow travellers. The difference between what will wants to do and what the rest of the gang want to do is apparent throughout the entire film. For example when the boys leave to go traveling and they follow the bus that Katy is one at the bus station will is trying to fit in with the other travellers but Neil then comes over an...

Giroux theroy

Giroux Theory (1997) Representation of youth Giroux views show how the youth are mistreated within media. Describing them as an empty category explains that adults don’t understand what it is like to be a youth in this generation. Therefore they just but their own ideas into this empty space of what they believe their representation is. The effects Media involving just adults therefore greatly effects these representations. The adults do not want their generation to look bad therefore uses teenagers as a scapegoat. The role of media representations in society By looking at this theory we are able to see that the representation of youth is moulded together through what adults believe and think. This then leads to uprising of stereotypes through the media and also cause moral panics. When all of this has just been created through hegemony and the media raining down their ideas.

Acland theory

Acland theories represents youth as being delinquent and this enhances hegemony. This is done by the ideal of ‘norm’ adult and youth behaviour. This contrasts deviant youth behaviour. Representation of media He believes that the way the media represents of young people allows the state to control them. This is known as the ‘ideology of protection’ idea that youths need to be constantly watched. Effects of these representations Acland’s theory effects the representations as the adults see youth as all being reckless and they have to keep enforcing that these actions are bad. This si to enforce the hegemony of how they should not behave when they reach adulthood. This means that there will be more negative stories about youth in the media.

Hebdige Theory

Dick Hebdige Dick Hebdige is a British media theorist and sociologist, and a Professor of Art and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His work is commonly associated with the study of subcultures, and its resistance against the mainstream of society. His current research interests include media topographies, desert studies, and performative criticism. Hebdige has written extensively on contemporary art, design, media and cultural studies, on mod style. What is his theory   The Hebidge theory comes out of Dick Hebdige’s book Subculture: The meaning of style. The book focuses on the UK’S youth subcultures. Drawing from Marxist theorists, literary critics, French structuralists, and American sociologists, Hebdige presents a model for analysing youth subcultures. While Hebdige argues that each subculture undergoes the same trajectory, he outlines the individual style differences of specific subcultures, such as Teddy boys, mods, rockers, skinheads,...

Mods and Rockers

Image
Mods and rockers What are mods? Mod is a type of people that really came to the fore front of culture is the 1950’s. They were the first set of teenagers after the Second World War and were therefore the first generation with a disposable income and could afford to go out and drink and do drugs. Mods had a very iconic fashion sense that consisted of tailored suits usually based on Italian style, short slick haircuts, and they drive around on scooters like vespers and lambretta. They get a lot of their ideas from Europe. Traditionally mods were working class people living on housing estates and working in factories or coal mines. What are rockers? Rockers like mods were a subculture that got massive in the 1950’s but they were very different to mods in nearly every single way. Rockers wore biker boots, leather jackets, and jeans and traditionally rode proper motorbikes. Rockers were also working class but spent their money on different things. There was also a rivalry bet...
